You will set off on your route from the Port of Hinx. There, you will find an old ferry. What did it do? Thanks to this vessel, people could cross from one bank of the Adour to the other, in exchange for a payment. This made it easier to travel and trade between Hinx and Téthieu (people, tractors, cattle and produce). The payment was made in the name of a crossing toll called the droit de pontonnage, to the Lord of Hinx. The boat you can see in Hinx is made of metal. It was built in Vierzon in 1970. Before that, the ferries were made of wood. They could weigh anywhere from 12 to 15 tonnes. In 2000, the metal boat’s hull was pierced. It has been out of service ever since. The ferry was piloted by a ferryman, a role handed down from father to son. The ferryman was appointed by the Mugron Post Office.
