Les Ailes

Located at the top of the beach of Les Ailes, this monument commemorates the crossing of the North Atlantic in 1929 by Assolant, Lefèvre and Loti. They arrived from Comillas, having crossed the ocean from west to east, from Old Orchard (USA) to Comillas. They landed by force in Mimizan on June 16, 1929 on board of "L'Oiseau Jaune" following a gasoline breakdown. The monument "forgets" Schreiber, a stowaway who boarded the plane and who also made the crossing. However, his name appears on the additional panels added on the 80th and 90th anniversaries.
