Commanderie de Bessaut

Located at the limit of Lencouacq and Retjons, the ruins of the Commanderie de Bessaut, now consolidated, are in the heart of the forest
The hospital was founded in the 13th century by the order of Saint-Jacques de l'Epée Rouge, and was intended to welcome pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, by the great road known as the Vézelay route. The buildings devastated during the wars of religion, sold as national property and the recycling of materials have left only a few sections of walls
The most interesting part remains the ogival portal of the chapel with columns, capitals carved with ivy foliage and four arches.
