Collégiale de Pimbo
On the Via Podiensis (road to Le Puy-en-Velay), pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela inevitably pass through Pimbo between the stages of Miramont-Sensacq and Morlanne. You too can stop off at the oldest fortified town in the Landes to admire the collegiate church of Saint-Barthélemy de Pimbo, whose foundation is attributed to Charlemagne in 778.
With its wide bell tower-porch, the collegiate church's massive, majestic silhouette is an imposing sight. Despite the ravages of time, the 12th-century building retains its 14th-century military and defensive appearance. Admire the portal carved with Celtic-style discs, pine cones and figures. Once inside, step outside to discover the parish priest?s garden, with its panoramic views over the Gabas valley and, in fine weather, the Pyrenees mountain range.
