Chapelle de Bouricos

Open until 31 December 2024

PONTENX-LES-FORGES

It is a restored 12th century chapel, formerly with a single nave, it is completed by 2 side chapels. The high altar is made of white marble, topped by the statue of St John. A gabled bell tower makes up its façade. The entrance door is a pointed arch with simple ribs dating from the 15th century. The apse is circular with two semicircular crosses which seem to date from the 13th century. An opening from the end of the 11th century, discovered behind an altarpiece, decorates the apse. In this place, there is also a small polychrome wooden statuette from the Spanish school of Burgos.
The oldest mention of Castrum Nostrum de Bouricos appears in the Gascon rolls. Perhaps there was a hospital at this place. The house of Espitau (hospital in Gascon) was used until recently as accommodation for the monks.
Nowadays it is an accommodation for pilgrims.
