Abbaye bénédictine et son abbatiale
A landmark of Saint-Sever, don't miss this historic monument founded in 988, which is open to the public. The abbey is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.
Its abbey-church has preserved a rare 11th-century chevet with 7 staggered apses. Numerous destructions and reconstructions have transformed the church, whose interior has been completely renovated as in the 19th century. 77 Romanesque capitals and a tympanum adorn the building. Its romantic Cavaillé-Coll organ, housed in an 18th-century case, provides the perfect setting for services and concerts. The 17th-century cloister and chapter house, now the treasure room, are also open to the public.
In addition to the paid summer guided tours, you can rent a "Le Voyage de Guilhem" tablet from the Tourist Office for your own visit, and find out more about this remarkable edifice.
