Peyrehorade
Peyrehorade was founded in the Middle Ages between the Gaves rivers and the hill of Aspremont. The town took advantage of its location at a crossroads—between the Landes, Béarn, and the Basque Country—to grow, as evidenced in particular by its market, which dates back to 1358. Replacing the fortress of Aspremont, the imposing Château d’Orthe, built in the 15th century on the banks of the Gaves, marks the southern entrance to the town. Today, it houses the town hall. A large Jewish community, fleeing the Inquisition, settled in the town in the 17th century, as evidenced by the presence of three Jewish cemeteries. Since 2024, the town of Peyrehorade has proclaimed itself the French Capital of the Kiwi.
