"Serge Labégorre?s work masterfully contradicts the thesis of the agony of Western art history. Indeed, the radical upheavals of Picasso, Céline and Joyce, the telluric brutality of Pollock, the near-silence of Beckett and Rothko, and the impulsive universe of Simenon, all seem to foreshadow the advent of an irredeemable nihilism. But then there's Labégorre, an inspired painter of souls in pain, but not dead, whom the customary qualifier ?expressionist- very imperfectly defines."
