With their long desert tunics and Touareg turbans, or shesh, the Tinariwen are the precursors of what is now known as "desert blues", a musical style they themselves call assuf, meaning "nostalgia" or "homesickness" in the Tamasheq language.
Having traded in their Kalashnikovs for guitars in the wake of the 1990 Tuareg rebellion, the members of Tinariwen have become true rock?n?roll rebels, captivating audiences the world over with their husky vocals, soaring riffs and spellbinding rhythms.
